(Madison, Wis.) – Three students will gain experience in the feed business and dairy management this summer as Vita Plus interns. They are Chelsea Daines, Iowa State University; Amber Johnson, University of Minnesota; and Marin Western, Michigan State University. They will work on different teams, focusing on specific projects for the duration of the summer, while learning the values of Vita Plus.

Chelsea Daines is from Westby, Wisconsin. She is a senior at Iowa State University, majoring in dairy science with a minor in microbiology. Her passion for agriculture grew from her early involvement in 4-H, dairy cattle shows and work on dairy farms. Daines took these experiences with her to college where she is a current member of the ISU Dairy Science Club, Sigma Alpha sorority and the ISU Dairy Judging Team. She will work out of the Madison office this summer and her main focus will be on analysis of drinking water fed to calves and how water quality affects their health and growth. She hopes by the end of the summer she will help producers realize how important water quality is on their farms. In her spare time, Daines enjoys hunting, fishing and DIY crafts.

Amber Johnson is from Chetek, Wisconsin, where she grew up on a 60-cow registered Holstein farm. Although her family sold the cows in 2013, their impact was substantial as she decided to pursue a degree in animal sciences. She is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota and a member of the Dairy Club, Block and Bridle Club, and Beta of Clovia sorority. She also brings experience as an assistant nutrition consultant at Lakeland Cooperative and the 2015 Barron County Fairest of the Fair to the Vita Plus western region dairy team. Based in central Minnesota, the main focus of her internship will be on transition calf health during the weaning stage and research into optimizing growth in height and weight during this time period.

Marin Western is from Croswell, Michigan, and currently attends Michigan State University as a senior studying animal science and agribusiness management. Although she didn’t grow up on a dairy farm this didn’t deter her from working on other dairy farms and realizing her desire to help dairy producers. This summer she will work with the forages team in the Madison office to conduct research on silage yeasts and molds to uncover the true extent of these spoilage organisms on dairy farms. Western brings with her research experience from the dairy cattle nutrition lab at MSU where her focus was on rumen analysis of dairy cows. She is also a member of the MSU Dairy Challenge and Dairy Club and enjoys riding horses, being active outdoors, and spending time with her family in her free time.
